Specialist Medical Review Council Considers appeals on medical grounds from decisions of the Repatriation Medical Authority. A separate Council under the Convener, or a Presiding Councillor considers each medical condition that becomes subject to a review. Professionals, medical or scientific, must have at least 10 years experience in the relevant field and have been nominated by their respective professional or medical college before being appointed as a Councillor by the Minister for Veterans' Affairs. Veterans' Review Board The Veterans' Review Board is an independent statutory authority. Its function is to review decisions of the Repatriation Commission on such matters as claims for the acceptance of injury or disease as war/defence caused, claims for the war widow's pension, assessment of the rate of pension paid for war/defence caused incapacity and claims for the granting of attendant allowance. The VRB may affirm, vary or set aside the decision under review and, where appropriate, substitute its own decision.
