THE Prime Minister's office has denied reports he has been sounding out an alternative Governor-General.
The action follows reports John Howard has spoken to Qantas chairwoman Margaret Jackson about taking over from Dr Peter Hollingworth.
A spokesman for Mr Howard said neither he, nor anyone on his behalf, had sounded out possible replacements and the Governor-General continued to have the PM's support.
"Reports that the Prime Minister or people acting on his behalf have been sounding out possible replacements for the Governor-General are wrong," the spokesman said today.
"The Governor-General continues to have the Prime Minister's support."
The Bulletin magazine said Mr Howard sounded out Ms Jackson as a replacement.
It also said Ms Jackson was Mr Howard's original choice for the vice-regal position.
