More children taken from Woomera
From AAP
29jan02

NINE unaccompanied children who threatened suicide have been moved from the Woomera detention centre, the immigration department has said.

The nine - five Afghanis and four Iraqis, all aged between 16 and 17 - were taken from the centre today and placed in the care of the South Australian Department of Human Services, a department spokesman told AAP.
The children, who had threatened to commit suicide by 5pm CDT today if not released from the centre in SA's north, technically remained in detention, the spokesman said.
They will be cared for by SA's Family and Youth Services under the auspices of the SA Department of Human Services, he said.
The spokesman would not comment on where the children had been sent, but it was believed to be Adelaide.
Lawyers for some detainees at Woomera had said 11 unaccompanied children had threatened suicide but the spokesman said the department was aware of only nine.
